Forest Food Garden
The Biodiversity Management Committee, Akathethara, in collaboration with the Kerala State Biodiversity Board and MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme), has launched the Forest Food Garden Project at Shasthanagar and Kunnampara.
The project was conceived with the objective of transforming cremation grounds from places often associated with fear and isolation into beautiful green spaces and gardens where the public can spend peaceful and enjoyable moments during their leisure time. By developing these areas into vibrant ecological landscapes, the initiative seeks to create a more welcoming and environmentally friendly atmosphere.
Another key objective of the project is to make the Panchayat more self-reliant by promoting and cultivating indigenous fruit-bearing trees. Through the conservation and propagation of native plant species, the project contributes to biodiversity enhancement, environmental sustainability, and the long-term ecological well-being of the region.
